Why you’ll always find salt and pepper on the table: Nutritionist reveals surprising health benefits

Salt and pepper are two staples of cooking, but flavor and taste aren’t the only reason spices are a major part of our diet.

In a TikTok video, nutritionist Lisa Kilgour said there are actually a number of health benefits behind why these spices will be on the table.

“Ever wonder why there’s always salt and pepper on the table…like why isn’t there oregano on everything?” Kilgour said in the clip.

According to Kilgour, we actually need salt for our bodies in order for “our cells to function properly.”

Since salt is so “innate”, we have to decide for ourselves how much salt our food needs.

Our bodies may often carry salt, but there are reasons behind this.

According to Kilgour in another video, she said that when people crave salt, it can be for many different reasons.

One reason, she said, is that those with low blood pressure tend to crave salt because your body “demands it because water follows salt, you absorb more water when you have salt.”

“When there’s salt in there, it increases your blood volume and that allows the body to deal with the daily changes in blood pressure that are needed,” she said.

While it doesn’t solve everything Kilgour said, it may remove some of the upside for those who might suffer.

On the other hand, Kilgour told Black Pepper, “It’s a little more interesting.”

Black pepper doesn’t bring out any pre-existing flavor in a dish the way salt does.

However, it brings its own flavor, and the health benefits behind black pepper may even surprise you.

Kilgour said black pepper “helps with digestive function and stomach support.”

Black pepper is rich in a plant compound called piperine, which test-tube studies have found to have powerful antioxidant properties.

So if you don’t have salt and pepper on the table, you better put them on quickly to get all the benefits.
