Whether your dry mouth symptoms are temporary or long-lasting, these simple steps below can help moisturize your mouth.”
*Have regular sips of cold water or an unsweetened beverage to improve your fluid intake.
* Suck on sugar-free candies or chew sugar-free gum to stimulate your salivary glands to produce saliva.
*Suck ice cubes as the ice melts slowly moisten your mouth.
* Avoid smoking, caffeine, and alcohol (including mouthwashes containing alcohol) as these can all make dry mouth worse.
“If these don’t help, your healthcare professional may advise you to use an artificial saliva substitute to keep your mouth moist. If radiation therapy or Sjogren’s syndrome is the cause of your dry mouth, a drug called pilocarpine may be prescribed to stimulate your salivary glands to produce more saliva,” she added.
