Side Effects of Drinking Celery Juice, Dietitian Says – Don’t Eat This

Mixing and drinking celery stalks is not as strange as it might seem. In fact, celery juice – the liquid filtered from the mixture of celery stalks – can be extremely beneficial for your health. This nutrient-packed green smoothie not only provides your body with all kinds of vitamins and minerals it needs, but can also help ward off disease and keep your body healthy in the long run. But with the many health benefits celery juice can provide, are there any negative side effects to keep in mind if you drink this juice regularly?

we talked with Mackenzie Burgess, RDND., a registered dietitian and recipe developer at Cheerful Choices, talks about the benefits of drinking celery juice, plus one drawback to consider if you enjoy this green juice on a regular basis. One of the main benefits of drinking celery juice regularly is the increase in micronutrients your body gives you in an easy green cup.

“One of the big benefits of celery juice is that it’s packed with nutrients like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and K,” says Burgess. “These nutrients are essential for many important functions in our bodies.”


One cup of celery juice is also a valuable source of calcium (8% of the daily value), magnesium (7% DV) and potassium (14% DV).

“Calcium, potassium, and magnesium can help lower blood pressure and have been found to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke,” says Burgess.

One study was published in Journal of Chiropractic Medicine He evaluated the benefit of drinking celery juice for a hypertensive patient and found that including celery juice in his diet, as well as regular chiropractic care, found that his blood pressure decreased over time. While this study only looked at one patient, many experts maintain that different nutritional aspects of celery juice can continue to benefit your heart health in positive ways.

Burgess points out that celery juice can help support eye health due to its vitamin A boost. One cup of celery juice contains 7% of your DV of vitamin A, which is an important nutrient for “vision, growth, cell division, reproduction, and immunity,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Celery juice is also hydrating, which helps in improving skin health. The vitamin C in this green juice (which contains 16% of your DV) can also aid in the synthesis of collagen), which forms the supportive tissues of the joints and is responsible for skin elasticity (i.e. makes your skin smoother).

Celery is known to be a good source of fiber, as one cup of whole celery sticks contains 1.6 grams of fiber in addition to beneficial vitamins and minerals.

“Fiber helps feed the good bacteria in your gut that support a healthy gut microbiome and lead to the production of some beneficial compounds like short-chain fatty acids,” says Burgess. Plus, fiber helps keep you full for longer and can help prevent constipation and lower cholesterol.

Unfortunately, when you blend and strain celery stalks to make juice, they also remove most of the fiber, according to Burgess. Without fiber and protein in a meal, blood sugar levels can rise and fall quickly, leaving you feeling hungry instead of feeling satisfied and full after a meal.

If you want to reap the benefits of celery juice, Burgess recommends pairing it with a source of protein and fiber in order to get these macronutrients into your meal — and keep you feeling full for a longer period of time.

“Try pairing celery juice with a source of protein and fiber like whole-grain toast with almond butter or a vegan egg,” she says.
