Robert’s Pizza Launches Detroit-Style Pizza While Raising Money for Muscular Dystrophy

Detroit-style pizza makes its debut at Robert’s Pizza & Dough Co. in Streeterville through a private partnership raising funds for a great cause. Robert Garvey teamed up with Billy Zureikat to launch a special version of the Detroit-style cake while raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“We’ve been wanting to add a Detroit-style pizza to the menu for a while, so we’re excited to be able to partner with Billy on our first pizza,” says Robert Garvey, founder of Robert’s Pizza & Dough Co. It’s been a long time!”

“Tripping Billy Pizza” ($29) features a shishito pepper cream sauce, corn, jalapeno chutney, mozzarella, cheddar, scallions, and roasted shishitos in Robert’s Detroit-style pizza crust. 50% of the proceeds of every Tripping Billy sold during March will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, an organization that helps children and adults living with Muscular Dystrophy, ALS and neuromuscular diseases.

Tripping Billy is the first Detroit-style pizza Robert’s Pizza will offer. Starting in April, the pizzeria will offer a Detroit Pizza special on Tuesdays each week. Alongside Robert’s Pizza recipes, guests can expect several new recipes that Robert has tried in the kitchen.

Robert and Billy first met in 2020. Robert’s Test KitchenA weekly series during the COVID-19 pandemic in which a select few fans of Robert’s Pizza got the chance to participate in a Facebook livestream while trying one of Robert Garvey’s creative pies. Billy had the opportunity to try it. Smoking Goose Meat Pizza with duck prosciutto, Calabrian chiles, roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, mozzarella and trillium (triple cream) cheese pizza. Since then, Billy and Robert have been waiting for a moment to work together. After reconnecting in 2022, Robert was working on a Detroit-style pizza dough recipe, and this seemed like an opportunity to get Billy involved.

“If you’ve ever tried Robert’s dough, you know it’s really special,” says Billy Zureikat. “He and I decided to take the true Tripping Billy experience to another level by presenting it to you in its original form.”

Billy began his pizza journey in November 2021 when he launched a fundraising project to raise money for muscular dystrophy. “Tripping Billy” has made its way into many of Chicago’s pizzerias, but it’s the first time it’s been paired with Robert’s pizza dough. Billy was diagnosed with limb-arch muscular dystrophy in March 2021, but began experiencing symptoms more than eight years ago. Since his diagnosis, Billy has devoted himself to cooking and making delicious pastries, turning his newfound passion into a project that can make a difference. He has raised over $37,000 for muscular dystrophy since starting this journey, and he hopes to increase that number even more through his partnership with Robert’s Pizza.
