St. Petersburg-based Canopy Builders, a high-end custom home builder, plans to offer new townhomes on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. N.

This week, the St. Petersburg Development Review Commission approved a variance request for a project called Canopy Oaks Townhomes that would be built on the 1900-1920 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N.

Canopy Builders would build a new single-family residence at 917 19th Ave. N. and would retain the existing office at 1900 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St N. The developer would also build new townhouses at 1920 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N., according to the plans presented.

Gulfport vegan restaurant Golden Dinosaurs has a new owner

Popular Gulfport vegan restaurant Golden Dinosaurs has sold.

Haerle Wolfgang sold the 3,440-square-foot restaurant at 2930 Beach Drive S. to KOR Capital Fund for $1 million.

The restaurant is run by husband and wife duo Brian and Audrey Dingeman.

It’s known for putting a vegan spin on traditional meat dishes with fan favorites like its house-made pastrami seitan, chili dog, buffalo tempeh, and desserts like vegan cheesecake and products of oven

The sale comes after the restaurant celebrated its four-year anniversary in July.

The owners did respond to a request for comment about the future of the business.

Punky’s Bar & Grill is closed

Punky’s Bar & Grill, known for being a hot spot for the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community, has officially closed its doors.

Punky’s Bar & Grill, which has operated for seven years at 3063 Central Ave., closed its doors Wednesday.

“Two thousand four hundred and twenty-three days. We have achieved a lot in that time. We’ve made friends, loyal customers, gotten an amazing team of employees who have become family,” owners John Burt and Lynn Deibert posted on Punky’s Facebook page. “We’ve worked hard, laughed hard and we made a difference every time we had. We’ve become a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community, a melting pot for people from all walks of life…and their pets! We’ve celebrated victories, survived struggles, mourned losses, and come together to help each other and the community.”

The owners said they would be distributing their remaining food inventory, and whatever is left after that will be donated to charities that can distribute it to people in need.

A new hotel is being developed in Clearwater

Tennessee-based Beachrock Lodging LLLP plans to develop an Embassy Suites hotel at 325 Gulfview Blvd. and 326 Coronado Drive, which currently houses the Beachview Inn Clearwater Beach hotel.

The 1.6 hectare property, which was bought by the 3H Group last year, previously received development approval for a hotel project consisting of the demolition of an existing hotel and the construction of a new one hotel project with 180 overnight lodging units, an approved density of 113. units per acre, meeting space for guests, a pool, a new lobby and a parking lot with 241 parking spaces, according to documents from the city

Current plans show a nine-story, 99-foot Embassy Suites hotel with a rooftop pool and 11,667 square feet of retail, including a 4,436-square-foot restaurant.

A second public hearing for the project is scheduled for Aug. 18 at 6 p.m

Finca for sale in the Venetian islands

The custom built 3,520 square foot John Cannon home was built in 2019, representing newer construction in the Venetian Isles.

It has three bedrooms and a large outdoor entertainment area with a saltwater pool and a boat dock with a lift.

Before the house was built, the property was purchased for $760,000 in 2016.
