Protesters leave parents warm outside a Lubbock school

Some parents of Lubbock High School students were made very uncomfortable by anti-gay protesters who stood on the corner with signs last Monday morning. After the incident, dozens of photos and videos circulated on the Internet.

The sidewalks in front of the schools are public property, and a few protesters seem to really enjoy setting up there. I remember several organizations that stood in front of Coronado High School when I was a student. It was a very uncomfortable situation for the child. I was handed various religious texts and pamphlets by strangers who tried their best to tell me how I should approach this or that topic.

Should more be done to keep them away from children?

I try to think how it must feel for a gay student to be subjected to public degradation. If you watch the video below this article, you can hear a man singing the words “It’s not okay to be gay” in a funny way. It’s clear that he really enjoys ruffling everyone’s feathers around him.

One worried parent, Susie Shay, took a video and texted me about how she felt seeing them standing there as she took her child to school.

“I had just dropped Finn off and was on my way home when I drove past those people honking their horns. So I spun around to see the situation. I noticed two policemen standing along the wall. I just talked to Finn about how bad it is. I was bullied at school and then I see these things. It pissed me off beyond words. Kids who live life through the rainbow have a hard enough time just trying to do it, they don’t need these people messing with them. It invites chaos into the world. university where our children should be educated.”

How do you feel about protesters in front of schools? Aren’t you uncomfortable dropping your kids off on a Monday morning? I certainly believe in a person’s right to protest, but a school environment where this is done seems very wrong. Let me know how you feel in a comment on our KFMX Facebook page.
