‘Pizza bill’ back in front of Connecticut lawmakers

A move to make pizza the official state dish of Connecticut stirs up trouble again.

HARTFORD, Conn. – They were sent back to the kitchen two years ago.

“A Bill Designating Pizza as a State Meal” passed the Connecticut House of Representatives, but was never called for a vote in the State Senate.

But this year, some lawmakers are trying again; Senate Act 390 would make Pizza the official dish of Connecticut.

State Senator Gary Winfield, who represents New Haven and West Haven, is part of the Elm City delegation that supports the use of pizza as a state meal. Winfield made it a point to note that most of the bills he worked to pass were about very serious issues, but the pizza bill had its place. Winfield said, “I’ve gotten calls from a lot of people saying you actually did it, right? To me, that, although a bit silly, showed that there are a lot of people who want it to happen, so why not do it again.”

At Zuppardi’s Apizza in West Haven, they’re all the way behind Pizza Bill. Lori Zuppardi, one of the owners of the legendary pizza shop for nearly 90 years, said making pizza the official state meal is more about celebrating small business and unity in the state. “I want pizza to be the state food because it’s about community, it’s about sharing, it’s about being a part of the community, and that’s what Connecticut is about,” Zuppardi said.

Colin Caplan, who directed Taste of New Haven Food Tours and produced the movie “Pizza”; A Love Story” is among the most ardent supporters of the Pizza Law. “No one has pizza as their state meal, and there isn’t any state meal in Connecticut right now … we know pizza is Connecticut’s state meal and our favorite thing in the world,” Caplan said. “We’re going to put a real effort into that, I’m 100 percent behind it, and hopefully by the time we’re done with this session, pizza will be the state food,” Winfield said.

The timeline for the Pizza Law legislative vote will likely come between March and June. click to learn more
