Manc queens reign supreme as RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner is crowned
The winner of season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK was crowned last night and Manchester’s queens completely dominated the finals.
Both Cheddar Gorgeous and Danny Bird, prolific and much-loved Manchester-based talents, made it to the final two, making our city proud.
The pair beat fellow finalists Black Peppa and Johnbers Blonde to face off in a lip-sync battle.
The 10-week competition was fierce in all the right ways, but it was Danny Baird, the first bearded contestant in Drag Race UK history and originally from Liverpool, who was eventually crowned the winner.
After their victory they said: “Thank you for believing in me. I have had the most wonderful dream here, meeting the most amazing people.
“I never thought anyone who pulled like me could be a Ru girl, so this is for everyone else out there. I can’t wait for the world to know what Danny Baird is.”
Guest judges this year have included Olly Alexander, Boy George and Aisling Bee, with Michelle Visage appearing as head judge for the first time.
Judge Graham Norton told Danny: “Oh my god, you’re funny. But what I didn’t expect was all the looks.
“When you’re on stage, eyes are drawn to you, and that’s something you can’t learn, you learn how to use.”
Both Danny and Cheddar are familiar faces on the Manchester nightlife scene, with Cheddar part of the Family Gorgeous troupe, made up of some of our most talented queens.
And the Munks have been delighted to see local queens getting so far in a competition that has often been dominated by Londoners.
Actress Annie Wallace on Twitter“Huge congrats to @thedannybeard on winning @dragraceukbbc and congrats to @CheddarGorgeous…we’re doing it RIGHT in Manchester!”
Another person wrote: “What I love about Cheddar and Danny doing away with the season is that they, along with the Manchester queens in general, were basically rejected by the Drag Race brand in some way or shape until Season 4 : So glad the producers are over. Their metaphysical dependence on the queens of London.’
Another said: “I was so excited to see two iconic Manchester queens in the top two. @CheddarGorgeous and @thedannybeard were (and still are) in the Manchester drag scene when I was growing up gay. So, so SO happy.”
Manchester Pride wrote: “We’re proud to have been the platform for some of this year’s #DragRaceUK finalists this year, but we can’t help but root for our MCR Queens this eve.
“@CheddarGorgeous and @thedannybeard you have done Manchester so proud!”
Another said: “Love to @CheddarGorgeous and congrats to @thedannybeard. TWO WONDERFUL ARTISTS. I never thought the race could be so tight for me personally and they crushed it. Manchester smashed it.”
