At the southern end… Local resorts, outfitters and ice guides are constantly hard at work plowing ice lanes, decorating bomber and runway platforms and moving fish houses in an effort to stay on walls and saugers. Ice fishing is in full swing and will be until March.
Some anglers are being rewarded with trophy prizes over 30 inches along with the different sizes we see this time of year and inhabit the lake. Saugers are also in good numbers, adding to a good fish fry.
The depth varies depending on the equipment and where they are fishing, but generally 30-34 feet has been the norm. Some anglers are finding a smaller bite in 16-19 feet in the morning or afternoon.
One: two rigs, jigging a line and holding the second line with a live rig under a bobber or watching your rod tip for anything unusual while it sits in a bowl.
Popular colors in the stained water of Lake of the Woods are gold, shimmer, and bright colors. This past week, the orange did well.
Mixed bag as usual at Lake of the Woods. Walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and even some sturgeon. This week, a white fish was also caught. They are present in the lake but are not common at the southern end.
In the Rainy River… The golden hour, or morning and evening bite continues to be the best for those ice fishing the river for coolers and saugers.
Some sturgeon fishermen, fishing at night, have been catching some big fish.
Stopping some giants from sleeping!
Ice conditions can change on the river because of the current, work through a station or safety equipment.
Up in the NW Angle… A week fishing with a big wheel on an angle. Resorts spread across this island area overlooking the structure and the deep mudflats adjacent to the structure.
Typically, this part of the lake has a higher percentage of walleye than saugers. Other fish are mixed in like on the south bank.
Driving to Anglesey from Canada no longer requires a vaccination or the use of the ArriveCan app.
For those looking to bypass customs and enter Angle, snowshoeing around the lake on marked trails or using the Lake of the Woods Passenger (bomber) Service are the best options.
The fish houses are open until March. Complete listing of lodges, fish house rentals and cabin rentals at www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com/
