Jennie Finch Fuels the Grill and Competition with Johnsonville and ACL Interview

While some people might think of ESPN Ocho and Dodgeball, SuperHole III is coming to the channel. As an official sponsor of the American Cornhole League (ACL), Johnsonville reached out to USA gold medalist Jennie Finch for some competitive tips ahead of the big tournament. While this competition may not be about Olympic glory, there’s plenty of fun to be enjoyed. More importantly, Johnsonville Brats and Cornhole are a winning combination for any game day.

During her distinguished career, Finch was more than one of the most well-known softball pitchers. Her determination and humble demeanor endeared her to all athletes and inspired many young women to pursue diamonds. Still, the old adage “once and always an athlete” can come into play.

FoodSided recently spoke to Finch about their collaboration with Johnsonville and the American Cornhole League ahead of the SuperHole III competition. While this competition may not be about Olympic gold, her experience comes into play.

When asked if her accuracy as a pitcher helps sink that perfect shot, Finch replied that she originally thought it would help, but it wasn’t quite that simple. Still, one aspect definitely gave her an edge. Finch said, “I think my mental strength and toughness carries over into everything I do, especially when you’re trying to hit that hitting zone in a cornhole contest.”

Though this weekend’s competition is for all the glory, Finch appreciates that cornhole can be just for fun. Specifically, she spoke about how all her kids can get together for spirited play. It’s a perfect night with a brat in one hand and a bag in the other.

While her family bought a set as a Christmas present a year ago, she recalled learning about a homemade version over 20 years ago. While that first experience might not have been quite as polished as today’s competitive version, there was still stiff competition.

One of the things that makes cornhole generally entertaining is that the game is simple backyard fun. Sure, it takes some skill to sink the perfect shot and possibly some witty banter, but the idea is to just throw in some bags and enjoy good times with friends.

Since every event needs food, Johnsonville, as an official sponsor of the ACL, would recommend firing up a few brats on the grill. While grill masters may have their tried and tested methods, Finch has one requirement for every brat.

Finch said her go-to fry topping is mustard. “I can’t get enough mustard. I like sweet mustard, any kind of mustard. I love it.”

While the choice of condiments is clear, Finch shared another favorite meal with this Johnsonville brat. She recommends a red cabbage salad. Her recipe consists of “red cabbage with red wine vinegar with a little oil, salt and pepper and onion powder. Then just let it sit for a few hours.”

Whether this roast is served with Finch’s coleslaw or a bag of chips, or simply enjoyed on its own, bratwurst and cornhole always make a winning combination. Just make sure you throw the bag, not the brat, when playing.

And be sure to catch SuperHole III and Jennie Finch on ESPN2: The Ocho. The special event will feature a variety of famous faces attempting to claim the coveted trophy.
