ISH, a food technology startup, plans to further shake up the food industry with healthy and sustainable plant-based seafood alternatives with its latest $5 million seed round. According to a press release from the company, the startup plans to accelerate the growth and development of its plant-based food products. The oversubscribed round was led by ACCELR8, with participation from Stray Dog Capital and several angel investors. ISH has raised a total of nearly $10 million to date.
The funds will be used primarily to advance ISH and the vegan seafood business into the burgeoning vegan food market, help the company continue to create more innovative products and lay the foundation for future partnerships. ISH uses a whole system approach to fill a market gap by developing sustainable, healthy and delicious vegan versions of consumers’ favorite seafood.
ISH’s products fill a huge gap in the vegan market by using healthy, natural ingredients like coconut and algae to create delicious products that mimic the texture and flavor of shrimp and other seafood products, which other brands struggle to imitate.
“The plant-based market has seen incredible growth over the past two years, but there is a tremendous lack of seafood alternatives,” said Bernard David, CEO and founder of ISH. “Currently, two-thirds of seafood is consumed away from home, which is why we have focused on providing healthy and sustainable plant-based seafood alternatives to diversify plant-based offerings to consumers initially in restaurants and universities.”
ISH, which stands for innovative, sustainable and healthy, launched its flagship Shrimpish product, plant-based shrimp, in early 2022 and has a strong product portfolio in development with over 25 products, including alternatives to salmon, cod, crab and lobster. They have the same taste and texture as their live counterparts.
Share Justin Kern, Partner at ACCELR8, which invests in companies that are making massive changes to reduce the effects of climate change. “We believe the ISH team is uniquely positioned to make a splash in the vegetarian seafood market, without sacrificing health and environmental concerns.”
“ISH helps people access delicious, healthy, and sustainable vegan seafood, a market where we see huge opportunities,” said Lisa Feria, CEO at Stray Dog Capital. “The vegetarian seafood category has sales potential of over $500 million, and we are excited to include ISH in our portfolio as this number continues to grow.”
The financing news comes on the heels of the company obtaining a B Corp certification as well as the recent partnership with Thai Union. The company’s products are currently available to consumers in many restaurants, colleges, and universities across the country. Click here to learn more about the company.
