Famine Relief Charity – Save the Children

The combination of conflict, the COVID pandemic and the effects of climate change has led to an unprecedented global hunger crisis with nearly 50 million people on the brink of starvation. The Australian government has the power to fight famine and help save millions of lives, but it needs to act now.

Together, with the Community Coalition and other humanitarian organisations, we are calling on the Australian Government to take urgent action to respond to the global hunger crisis. And you can help. Here’s more about the work we do as a famine relief charity to provide immediate help and how you can support our pledge to the Australian Government to step in and help.

Save the Children is one of the largest aid and development organizations in Australia. We help millions of children and their families in more than 100 countries around the world. We believe that every child deserves a bright future and we do our best to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When a crisis strikes, we respond quickly to save children’s lives and stay to help recover.

Together, we can help prevent millions of children from becoming malnourished and from starving to death. This is the work we do as a famine relief charity and how you can support us in our mission:

How we help children and families

In a crisis, children are always the most vulnerable. With the current hunger crisis, children who could not walk are surviving on less than one meal a day in some of the hardest hit countries. Without enough nutritious food, children cannot grow as they should. They are at high risk of acute malnutrition that can lead to stunting, irreversible damage to their physical and cognitive development, and death – and currently, nearly 8 million children under the age of five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition. As a famine relief charity we have teams dotted in countries around the world working hard to help these children. Some of the assistance we provide to help children and their families affected by the hunger crisis includes:

  • Providing emergency nutrition for severely malnourished children
  • Providing humanitarian cash assistance to families
  • Establish emergency health units so that we can screen a child for malnutrition and provide life-saving health care, nutrition and treatment services
  • Supporting treatment centers by training staff and providing life-saving supplies
  • Establishing drought treatment centers in some of the most affected areas

In addition to providing the immediate assistance needed to ensure children and their families have what they need to survive and thrive, we are also pressing the international community to address the root causes of food and nutrition insecurity.
