Experts share benefits and safety tips


Cleaning isn’t just for your home.

Your bowel can also be purging. Juice cleanses and cleanses in general have been around for a while, and are popular with models and influencers but also those who want to detox and get more fruits and vegetables into their diet.

We also know that there are pros and cons to cleansing, especially when it’s been done incorrectly, for too long or for the wrong reasons, like extreme weight loss.

That’s why we spoke with registered dietitian Mia Syn, MS, RDN, to help explain the do’s and don’ts of a cleanse and how to detox responsibly.

What is a juice cleanse?

A juice cleanse can be thorough or gradual, but the base is usually a blend of fruit and vegetable juice, packed with leafy greens like kale and spinach and other nutrient-dense foods like carrots, beets, green apples, lemons, and more.

The purpose for many is to “detox” the body by eliminating any processed foods, and to include only raw and organic fruits and vegetables throughout the cleanse. In many cases, you are allowed to snack on certain foods in non-juice form if you feel hungry, which also helps if you need to chew.

It must be the purpose of cleansing Not Weight loss, as this type of calorie deficit is not sustainable and can lead to poor diet and eating habits. This is also why it is recommended to do the cleansing for a few days at most, following the proper pre and post care mentioned below.

A juice cleanse can also be more gradual, with juices taken between small meals throughout the day. This type of eating helps give your body a boost of fruits and vegetables without depriving it (or you) of other things like protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. This method of drinking smoothies is also less restrictive and easier to maintain, making it a great option for testing the waters.

How do I prepare my body before cleansing?

While you might miss your cheeseburger a bit, eating a huge meal before you start your cleanse isn’t a great idea.

To make cleaning less traumatic for the body, you can start mitigating by making adjustments
your diet accordingly. Limit or eliminate stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, foods high in sugar and fat, as well as refined carbohydrates.

What should I do after the cleansing process is over?

Likewise, ending the cleanse is not the end of your health journey either, if you want the really good effects to last. While still avoiding alcohol and caffeine, Syn listed a few more tips for coming off the cleanse, too.

Are there any safety concerns when doing a juice cleanse?

As with any change to your diet or restricted eating, the first thing to note is whether you are physically and mentally healthy enough to participate. Those aiming to lose weight quickly or replace food altogether should not attempt a juice cleanse, as it can be a slippery slope for disordered eaters. Also, for those who are pregnant, nursing, underweight, or have any health conditions, it is advised to see a doctor or nutritionist before changing your diet.

“The juice’s low calorie and protein content can also cause your blood sugar to drop, leading to headaches and dizziness,” warned Sen. “It’s also important to note—typically when the body is restricted with calories, they are regained, so a juice cleanse is not a sustainable eating pattern for someone seeking weight loss.”

Another concern is the duration. Sen suggests no more than three days, making sure to listen to your body and eat whole foods when needed at any time.
