Does Enzyme Coffee Help You Lose Weight? Experts Explain Trending Drink
Some people prefer their coffee with milk only, while others like to stir things up by sipping variations like protein coffee, olive oil coffee, or even mushroom coffee. What about enzyme coffee for weight loss? The buzz drink was touted as a quick fix for losing weight and shedding belly fat—but is the hype really as it is?
Proponents of the trendy drink claim that the coffee blend contains digestive enzymes that help break down fat. But dietitians are less convinced. The beverage blends a variety of ingredients such as green coffee bean extract, chrome, yerba mate, and more. While regular coffee is known to speed up metabolism, which can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, according to Jim White, RDN, ACSM Ex-P, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, when it comes to enzyme coffee: explains that there is little scientific evidence to actually support it.
“It’s being touted as a weight loss beverage because it’s so high in caffeine, and there’s some research to support that caffeine can promote weight loss,” explains Keri Gans of RDN. What is enzyme coffee?
“Enzyme coffee is a blend of ground coffee, green coffee bean extract, green tea, chromium, yerba mate, and guarana,” explains White. “The combination of all these ingredients is said to aid weight loss because it boosts metabolism and can suppress appetite.” But why are these ingredients combined to produce a weight loss drink?
According to White, the National Institute of Health, chromium can be used to stabilize blood sugar, improve insulin resistance, and increase lean muscle mass. Does enzyme coffee work for weight loss?
The short answer is “no”, says Gans. “There is never a single food or drink that should be the ‘end of everything’ to lose weight; losing weight requires a lot of patience and compassion with oneself, as well as behavioral and lifestyle changes.”
However, for those struggling with overeating, coffee with enzymes can help suppress appetite. This effect is mostly due to caffeine, which is also found in regular coffee, which also helps boost energy. According to White, this energy boost can be beneficial in terms of exercise to complete longer, more intense sessions to burn higher calories overall.

There is no quick sip that will make you lose weight. While enzyme coffee isn’t a magic solution for weight loss, there are some weight loss drinks you can add to a healthy diet to get you closer to your goals. To keep it simple, Gans says, “Water is definitely an ideal beverage to contribute to weight loss.” “It has zero calories and can help with satiety.”
