When Derrick Faulcon acquired vegan donut company Donut Alliance in 2019, he renamed it Cloudy Donut because eating the soft pastry felt “light and airy, like chewing on a cloud.”

Cloudy Donut, like its predecessor, offers vegan recipes that use applesauce instead of eggs and no dairy or animal by-products. They also bake all donuts from scratch and in-house.

The company will open its first shop on Harford Road on the edge of Baltimore’s Beverly Hills neighborhood in 2020, followed by a second shop on Charles Street in Federal Hill in 2021. New York.

As a Black-owned business, Cloudy Donut has made it a priority to “bring Black businesses into the neighborhood and provide access to the Black community,” said Zewiditu Ruffin, Cloudy Donut’s Director of Partnerships. This includes hiring a majority of black and brown staff.

“Looking to the future, we want to support African-American businesses and guide people in the restaurant industry.

According to Ruffin, many black restaurateurs and entrepreneurs don’t have a “blueprint” for running a business, so Cloudy Donut wants to provide guidance to those who want it.

“I want to meet the one in the middle,” she said. “It’s bigger than us.

The Cloudy Donut Shop is part of Faulcon’s culinary empire. The empire also includes Home Maid, a breakfast and brunch boutique restaurant that makes every meal from scratch, and Boss Steaks, a gourmet cheesesteak pop-up.

It was 2020 when Faulcon launched his donut venture. At this time, established companies were trying to survive the early days of the pandemic.

Ruffin said the store has a takeaway restaurant model, which has helped it attract customers during the pandemic. Their menu can also be ordered from food delivery apps like GrubHub and DoorDash.

Cloudy Donut offers 44 flavors that rotate every weekend, including Blue Vanilla Glaze, Oreo Cookie Crumble, and Mango Chili Lime. There are also flour and sugar donuts on the menu for those who prefer a more plain donut.

You don’t have to be vegan to enjoy Cloudy’s desserts. They just gotta love donuts.
