Best New Winery Winners (2022)

Although the process of winemaking is thousands of years old, these new vineyards and wineries have only recently appeared on the scene, but that doesn’t stop them from making a name for themselves quickly. To find the best new wineries of 2022, we asked a panel of experts to nominate their favorites, then readers cast their votes for the top 10 winners.

No. 10: Serial Wine Tasting Room – Paso Robles, California

The former Odd Fellows building in downtown Paso Robles, California has been reborn as the new tasting lounge for Serial Wines. Decorated with original artwork, the 2,400-square-foot facility will showcase a variety of wines from the area’s top growers, along with cured meats and cheese platters for up to 65 guests.

No. 9: Bricoleur Vineyards – Windsor, California

Bricoleur (French for “one who creates with all available materials with no clear plan”) Vineyards is located on a beautiful sprawling estate in the scenic Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. The managers of this vineyard believe in sustainable farming, good wine and supporting their community. With not only estate vineyards but also olive groves and a honey farm, fruit orchards and boules courts, a visit to Bricoleur is an experience for everyone in the family.

No. 8: Orsi Family Vineyards – Healdsburg, California

The practices at Orsi Family Vineyards reflect a creative approach: using beneficial insects and ground covers instead of pesticides, thoughtful leaf removal, carefully hand-picked and perfectly ripened fruit, lack of water that forces deeper root growth, and even weed-eating sheep, rodent-eating owls and cutworm eating chickens. These innovative approaches lead to more intense flavors and excellent wine experiences in their new Sonoma County tasting room.

No. 7: Amaterra – Portland, Oregon

Portland’s newest winery features a 45,000-square-foot building and 12-acre vineyard with an outdoor event lawn, wedding venue, tasting room and Pacific Northwestern-inspired restaurant just a short drive west of the centre. Amaterra expects to produce 10,000 cases of wine per year, primarily pinot noir and chardonnay, through their patent-pending gravity-fed production facility that guests can view as they taste wine.

No. 6: Sidereus Winery – Cornelius, Oregon

This boutique vineyard in Willamette Valley is the reincarnation of A Blooming Hill Vineyard. The new owners plan minimal intervention so the wines can reflect what nature intended. Sidereus (Latin for “heavenly”) has a new tasting house with indoor and outdoor seating to sample their growing collection of wines.

No. 5: Marked Tree Vineyard – Flat Rock, North Carolina

Located at the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, Marked Tree takes advantage of the cool nights and ample sunshine to grow excellent grapes with award-winning results. Their wine tasting room offers charcuterie boards, local mountain trout plates, and other local delicacies to pair with their wines and mountain views. 10Dear wine expert Ava Roxanne Stritt tells us that Marked Tree is “so new that the vineyard owners themselves almost always take care of you.”

No. 4: Nenow Family Wines – Paso Robles, California

This small family winery has a small production of Rhone-inspired wines on the central coast of California. After purchasing their first grapes in 2017, their original tasting room opened in 2020. By 2022, they needed more space as their wine club membership had already quadrupled. The result is a new tasting room with an open-air tasting bar, comfortable outdoor seating and a private tasting room.

No. 3: Cho Wines – Chehalem Mountains, Oregon

Owner Dave Cho’s world travels impressed him with the universal simplicity of a meal shared with strangers and a modest bottle of wine. He and his wife Lois develop their vineyard on 77 acres of farmland in the foothills overlooking the Willamette Valley. Until their vineyard is ready, he works with local growers to create elegant wines to perfect his skills.

No. 2: Europa Village – Temecula, California

Top wine expert Marla Cimini recommends Europa Village, “an extensive, multi-resort winery, opening in 2020.” Europe combines three European destinations in one location: Spain, France and Italy. Experience an exciting Spanish winery in Bolero, with its olive oil tastings and tapas bars; a taste of French tranquility among the rose gardens of C’est la Vie; or escape into the coolness of the wine cave of Vienza.

No. 1: Stone Ashe Vineyards – Hendersonville, North Carolina

Craig and Tina Little spent years searching for American soil that would match their beloved Bordeaux region in France. They found it on 67 acres of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, then paired vine clones from France with California rootstock. Stone Ashe has now opened their 3,100 square foot tasting room for their wines with a full catering kitchen that can support wedding receptions and special events.
