Best Cheap Costco Groceries for Spring — March 2023
The new year may have officially started months ago, but spring is when new beginnings really happen. As the biggest Costco fan here at Kitchn, the warehouse is my first stop at the start of a new season. The store is full of plants for green thumbs, patio furniture for design enthusiasts, and outdoor toys for kids of all ages.
This spring, I welcome spring in a more modest way. I wandered around the warehouse to find the best budget groceries you can buy for this time of year. With these choices, you’ll be ready to bring the outdoors in, celebrate with those you love, and enjoy every bite of the fresh flavors of spring. These are the seven items I add to my cart throughout the season – and they’re all $10 or less.
1. Deluxe Garden Bouquet, $9.99
It’s almost time for daffodils to appear outdoors, signaling the start of spring. Bring some of that new growth energy indoors with flower bouquets from the warehouse. Choose your favorite color or floral variety from the Costco cooler. I love fluffy hydrangeas and delicate baby’s breath. The clusters are large, so you’re sure to have enough stems to brighten up almost any room in the house.
2. Utz Grillo’s Pickles Classic Dill Pickle Chips, $4.69 for 20 ounces
No picnic is complete without the salty crunch of potato chips. This spring, I’m trying a new flavor from a brand I love. Utz has teamed up with Grillo’s Pickles to create a dill pickle chip that looks like the perfect accompaniment to serve with club sandwiches and cookies.
3. S&W Organic Canned Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas), $8.79 for 8 cans (15.5 ounces)
4. Hampton Hills Small Asparagus Spears, $9.69 for 2.5 pounds
Asparagus is the harbinger of spring, so being able to have it anytime (out of the freezer, no less) is a godsend! The little spears come in four steamer bags (10 ounces) and only need a squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper. You can also roast or air fry the asparagus (just check it out a few minutes early) or add the asparagus to pizza, stir-fries, and skillet dinners.
5. Reser’s Main Street Bistro Oven Roasted Potatoes, $8.99 for 40 ounces
These chilled roast potatoes are the perfect springtime shortcut. Serve them with seared lamb chops for a date night at home or serve them for a crowd with bourbon-glazed ham. When it’s hot enough, spend your time getting to grips with the grill, letting Costco take care of the sides.
6. Kirkland Signature Master Carve Half Ham, $3.39 a pound (about 2.5 pounds)
Ham and spring go hand in hand. Serve this ham for small holiday gatherings, but don’t wait for a special occasion to pick it up. Add the ham to this cozy dish of scalloped potatoes that is (panting!) better than grandma’s. Host a casual brunch for your friends this weekend, adding ham, asparagus and Gruyere to the puff pastry. Prepare an easy French baguette sandwich for picnics in the park with ham (of course!), mustard, cheese and pickles.
7. Strawberries, $6.99 for 2 pounds
