Amherst Brewing makes “beer cocktails” with sour beer and ice cream

Enjoy two tablespoons of rainbow sorbet in the most adult way – drenched in sour beer and topped with whipped cream – to create a fresh take on the Root Beer float.

Amherst Brewing created the “Beer Cocktails” section of its menu for two of these beverage options, known as Orange Creamsicle Float Life and Raspberry Peach Float Life.

Orange Creamsicle Float Life uses sour Orange Creamsicle Juice Life beer, along with two tablespoons of rainbow sorbet and whipped cream and is topped with cherries. While the Raspberry Peach Float Life uses the same formula but with a sour Peach Raspberry Juice Life beer.

It also had Solstice-mosa, which included Solstice Dry Hopped Blonde Ale, fresh orange juice, and Cointreau.

But that’s not where the unique beer stops.

Amherst Brewing Taproom 55 opened next to The Hangar Pub and Grill in February 2020 about a month before the COVID-19 pandemic closed restaurants and many other businesses. It has since reopened and offers unique beer made with local ingredients, pool table, arcade games, and more. It also provides general information on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm

The Range is a fairly new beer to a brewery that has been around for 25 years. Helides said it’s made with local ingredients. Corn is grown in Hadley, while hops are from Northfield.

“It’s just a great expression of local ingredients and it’s a beer that everyone can enjoy,” said Caleb Heliades, president of the brewery at Amherst Brewing.

The brewery also has beer that resembles an acai bowl, which is a trendy breakfast item.

Popularly known as breakfast bowls, 6% ABV beers are made with mango, acai, cinnamon, and vanilla. Made in collaboration with N.S. Beer in Brooklyn, New York.

“The base is thicker,” said Hellides. “You can tell it has a lot of fruit.”

But how does it compare to an acai bowl?

“I think we poisoned the flavour,” he said.

And another one of their beers looks like a cheesecake.

“This is the fiercest beer we’ve ever brewed and it has as always been a pleasure working with the Branch and Blade crew on something truly out of this world,” the company wrote on Instagram.

Collaborating with other breweries to help learn and get unique ideas is a huge boost for Amherst Brewery. They also collaborate between their own and their staff from The Hanger Pub and Grill.

“We’ve done some crazy things,” Helides said, adding that they plan to make more unique beers when they open their second brewing location in West Springfield. It is expected to open for fermentation by the end of the year.
