A popular Berkeley bagel shop is opening another Bay Area location

Berkeley’s massively popular Boychick Bagels, which The New York Times’ Tejal Rao once called “some of the best New York-style bagels I’ve ever tasted,” is expanding again. After opening a second bagel shop in Palo Alto this fall, owner Emily Winston is now expanding to the South Bay, home to the upcoming Santa Clara.

“The factory I’m building is almost finished, and we should be done in a month or two,” Winston told SFGATE. “This will allow us to support more stores.”

Winston announced plans to build a wholesale plant in Berkeley’s Gilman neighborhood last summer. The factory will bake raw dough for each retail store as well as wholesale bagels. Once it opens in the next month or two, Boychik lovers can expect even more bagel shops to open in the Bay Area.

“I haven’t finished signing the retail lease yet,” Winston said. “Ideally, I’d like to be anywhere in the bay within 20 minutes, and you can get to Boychik.”

Boychik Bagels is opening a new location at 2050 Wyatt Drive, Santa Clara.

For now, he’s excited about the new Santa Clara restaurant at 2050 Wyatt Drive, which he expects to open this summer. He chose the location for both its large outdoor space and its proximity to offices such as Intel.
“We’re building this to handle really big catering orders,” he said. “If Google wants to order 10,000 bagels every Tuesday morning, we’ll do it here … I feel like you have to bribe people to come back to the office if you tell them it’s going to happen. Boychik Bagels are there, you invite them to show up at the office.”
The Santa Clara location will be a full retail space with the same menu as the other Boychick stores. While the Berkeley plant will make all the bagel dough, the bagels will still be fresh and baked at the bagel shop.
“I always wanted it to be baked on-site, because to me, it’s not a shop if the bagels aren’t baked on-site,” Winston said.

While many Boychik fans were excited about the news of the upcoming Santa Clara location, others were clamoring for an even bigger expansion.
“I know I have a lot of fans in San Jose, so a lot of people are very excited to be located close to them,” Winston said. “It’s funny on Instagram, I’ve posted and everyone’s like, ‘hey, we want to be here too!’ Everyone wants a place close to their home. So I think this is a good sign.”
Luckily for bagel lovers in the Bay Area, their dreams will come true next year.
“Basically, if people see anywhere in the Bay Area that would be great for Boychik, they can let me know,” Winston said. “…This year is going to be a big year for us.”
